CNN Article by Leah Ward Sears: Why the Marriage Gap is Bad for America

"Strengthening marriage and parenthood are key to renewing a broad and flourishing middle class."

"Marriage has long served the American experiment in democracy as an engine of the American Dream, a seedbed of virtue for children, and one of the few sources of social solidarity in a nation that otherwise prizes individual liberty."

These great quotes were published in an online CNN article by retired chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, Leah Ward Sears. She references the new State of Our Unions 2010 report by the National Marriage Project. Here's more about this important report:

In Middle America, Marriage is in Retreat
New Report Finds Marriage Trends Among the 58 percent of Americans With A High-School Education Increasingly Resemble the Poor

Released recently by the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia and the Institute for American Values, The State of Our Unions 2010 finds that marriage in Middle America is in trouble.

New data indicate that trends in nonmarital childbearing, divorce, and marital quality in Middle America increasingly resemble those of the poor, where marriage is fragile and weak. Yet among the highly educated and affluent, marriage is stable and appears to be getting even stronger. You can read the full report, get media updates and take part in the debate at the Institute's marriage and family blog, FamilyScholars.org.
